Japanese artwork, offset published by Konami in 1987.

Designed for the worldwide market place.  MSX version pictured.

The series debut box fine art, Metal Gear , would paint information technology's portrait of hero Snake reminiscing the all American, silver-screen activity hero of the 24-hour interval. This G.I Joe look-akin would in fact be modeled on player Michael Biehn in his function equally Kyle Reece from the original Terminator pic, and lacked the resemblance of who Snake was to become in the Solid series.

The box art would be used across all territories, a feat nevertheless uncommon at the time, and perhaps due to its western-friendly look. Its artist, whose unknown now, was likely Japanese due to it being published on the MSX and Famicom before the NES, and if so is an early on example of an American model being used to promote a Japanese game.

The box fine art would get a re-release in Japan when it was included as an extra in the Gamecube'southward Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes console pack.

Metal Gear

Designed for the European PlayStation marketplace.

The outset box art to launch Yoji Shinkawa'south iconic style that would dominate comprehend arts for the side by side 9 years.

The Japanese and N American version would remove the character fine art and instead settle for a mere logo.

The first embrace to truely depict Solid Ophidian. Much like the original box art the movie pastiche would remain with the newly grizzled anti-hero taking clues from Carpenter's: Snake Plissken, whilst sharing the physical look of both Jean Claude Van Damme and Christopher Walken.  Fifty-fifty with all the western influence Snake's chartacter art would now exist firmly Japanese in style.

Yuji would turn Serpent into the shadowy figure he e'er was with his Pentel brush pen artisry. His flowing, freestyle complemented the character's rugged, worn persona perfectly.

Metal Gear Solid ii by Yoji Shinkawa

Japanese artwork, start published by Konami in 2004.

Designed for the EU/ JP Gamecube market.

The Japanese version would be coloured grayness instead of cherry.

The North American version would discard Yoji'due south fine art and instead opt for in-game graphic symbol renders, a outset for the series.

Designed for the European union/ NA NES markets.

Ophidian's Revenge would be the unofficial sequal to Hideo Kojima's original Metal Gear and at the request of Konami of America.  With information technology only getting a release in N America and after Europe, the option of American creative person Tom Dubois who had an established relationship with Konami was natural.

The artist would mimick the Kyle Reese graphic symbol of the original and with it being released a few months before the official game Metallic Gear 2: Solid Serpent information technology is the first box fine art in the series to depict a Metal Gear.

Dubois would exist to appointment the simply western artist to pattern a series cover.

Snake's Revenge by Tom Dubois

Designed for the Japanese MSX2 market.

The official follow up to Metal Gear would artistically elevate the series with the help of TAMYA illustrator Yoshiyuki Takani.  It would be the final cover until Yoji Shinkawa would have over art direction for the Solid series in 1999.

Takani would later provide an artwork for the Japanese sectional Metal Gear Solid 3: Premium Edition.
